The Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, known as the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It was later renamed the King's Men after King James I took the throne. The theatre was one of the most famous venues for Elizabethan theater and showcased many of Shakespeare's plays. The modern replica that stands today was opened in 1997 to recreate the original atmosphere and experience of attending a performance at the Globe.
