E The rich, on the other hand, owned comfortable houses with many rooms. The History of Furniture The first pieces of furniture appeared when people learned to farm and started living in permanent settlements. In Europe some of the earliest known furniture comes from the Stone Age and was uncovered in Scotland about 2,000 BC. In Ancient Rome furniture became a symbol of one's social status.
