4 READING Read the text. Are these statements true, false or is the information not stated? A city girl goes whaling Last spring I visited my grandmother in Barrow, Alaska. More than half of the 4,100 people there are Inupiat Eskimos. That's what the Inuit there call themselves. It was good to be with my own people and hear them speak their language, Inupiaq. And I was able to learn more about Inupiat traditions. Barrow is great in the spring everybody is excited to see the sun again after 67 days of endless darkness. When I was there, we went whaling: yes, we, the Inuit, are allowed to kill some whales about 60 every year! I know a lot of people are against whaling. But if you want to understand Inuit culture, you have to know how important whaling is for us Everyone has a job to do at whaling time. The men look for big holes in the ice. Holes are the best places to find whales. The women cover the "uminks", the boats we use, with seal skins. We use snowmobiles to pull our tents and umiaks to an ice hole. Then the men wait, often for days, for a whale. When a whale comes, they use harpoons to kill it and to pull it onto the ice. It takes a day to cut up a whale. We use every part of the animal. In June we go out on the tundra in order to celebrate Nalukataq, the whaling festival, with family and friends. We ent the whale meat, talk, sing, dance and do Inupiat sports.
