The Vandals were a barbaric Germanic tribe that fought the Huns and Goths, founded a kingdom in North Africa, and destroyed Rome in 455 AD. Vandals migrated from their homeland in Scandinavia to the area between the Oder and Vistula rivers in the 2nd century BC. They continued to advance southward after they invaded Gaul (modern France). The kingdom they founded by 439 included the Roman province of Africa, the islands of Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Malta and Baloarix. They sacked Rome in 455 after repelling several Roman attempts to retake the province. Although the tribe has disappeared, their name lives on.
