Summary of Marie Curie's Life

Marie Curie, born Maria Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland, in 1867, was the youngest of five children. Her parents, both teachers, instilled in her a love of learning. After her mother died in 1877, Manya (as she was called) took on a tutoring job to support her family. She later moved to Paris to live with her sister Bronya, where she changed her name to Marie and studied Physics and Maths at the Sorbonne, earning Master's degrees in both.

While researching magnetism, Marie met Pierre Curie, and they quickly fell in love and married. They worked together to isolate radium, for which they received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. After Pierre's tragic death in 1906, Marie continued his work and took his position at the Sorbonne. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry. During World War I, she developed a mobile X-ray machine to assist in medical care on the front lines.

Marie Curie passed away in July 1934 from radiation poisoning. Her remarkable achievements and persistence have earned her respect and admiration, making her the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
