Today there are more than eight thousand summer camps in the USA and every year about four million children pass through their gates between the middle of June and the end of August. Some children come by bus every day from the nearest town. Others stay in camps for one or two weeks. Quite a lot of children go off to camp for the whole of the summer holidays, for a full ten or eleven weeks. There are quite strict rules: no smoking, no alcohol and no bad language, and the day starts with the raising of the national flag.
