Every year a lot of American children go camping. Read the article about camping in the USA and answer the questions that follow the text. Summer holiday camps for children began in the USA over sixty years ago. Today there are more than eight thousand summer camps in the USA and every year about four million children pass through their gates between the middle of June and the end of August. Some children come by bus every day from the nearest town. Others stay in camps for one or two weeks. Quite a lot of children go off to camp for the whole of the summer holidays, for a full ten or eleven weeks. There are quite strict rules: no smoking, no alcohol and no bad language, and the day starts with the raising of the national flag. But the instructors are young and friendly, good accommodation, there is plenty of good healthy food and lots of interesting things to keep you busy from morning till night. In many camps the children learn traditional crafts and cooking. Sports are as popular as arts and crafts. The most popular sport activities are swimming, boating, riding, and climbing. A lot of children also choose camp craft, canoeing and cycling. And every evening there are camp fires, talent shows and games. Everyone goes to bed tired but happy. Hardly any children say they would rather stay at home than go to a holiday centre. Children would prefer being outside! So next year they hope to have more holiday centre. 1.
