В данной задаче мы будем работать с временем Past Continuous и конструкцией "used to". Давайте по порядку рассмотрим каждую часть задания, чтобы все было понятно.

5.1 Заполнение диалогов

Начнём с того, что нам нужно преобразовать глаголы в Past Continuous (прошедшее продолженное время), используя возможные сокращения. Времена в английском языке мы образуем следующим образом: was/were + глагол-ing.

1. A: Your meeting went on for a long time this morning.
   B: Yes, I was trying to decide whether we need to cut the marketing budget.
   (сокращение: I’m = I was)

2. A: Well, what do you think?
   B: Sorry, I wasn't listening. Can you repeat what you said?
   (сокращение: I’m = I was)

3. A: I called you several times yesterday afternoon, but I only got your voicemail. What (you/do)?
   B: I was discussing the strategic plan with Angela and Jaroslav.

4. A: I need to call the hospital. My son and his girlfriend had an accident in his car last night and they weren't wearing seat-belts. Luckily, he wasn't driving very fast. It could have been much worse.
   (сокращение: they’re = they were, he’s = he was)

5.2 Прошедшее простое и прошедшее продолженное

Теперь мы будем ставить один глагол в Past Simple (простое прошедшее время) и один в Past Continuous. Времена в этом случае формируются следующим образом:

• Past Simple: глагол + -ed (для правильных глаголов; неправильные глаголы имеют свои формы).
• Past Continuous: как уже упоминалось, это was/were + глагол-ing.

1. When you called (call), I was talking (talk) to a client.
2. While I was entering (enter) some data into the spreadsheet, the computer crashed (crash).
3. Tim Berners-Lee invented (invent) the World Wide Web in 1989, while he was working (work) at CERN in Geneva.
4. I discovered (discover) some interesting information about their company, while I was surfing (surf) the Internet.
5. Everyone was waiting (wait) for the meeting to begin, when a message arrived (arrive) from Josef to say he was stuck in traffic.
6. The Leaning Tower of Pisa started (start) to lean in 1185, while they were building (build) it.

5.3 Использование "used to"

В этой части задания необходимо решить, может ли подчеркнутый глагол иметь форму "used to + инфинитив". Если может, мы пишем альтернативу, если нет — просто ставим "-".

1. Before they built the motorway, it used to take me an hour to get to work.
2. I saw Slava last week - he sends his regards.
