As a little boy Nathan loved sport. He started school in 1993. At school he played football, and in his free time he learned to ride. He loved animals. "When I grow up," he said. "I'm going to work with animals." For his ninth birthday Nathan asked his parents for a pair of riding boota and a new riding hat. He was really excited when he came down to breakfast on 11th April 1997, and there they were. After school that day some cousins and friends came to tea. "Our parents always said to us: 'Don't go near the new railway line.' But I saw this slow train and I tried to jump onto it. I fell ... under the train. I lost both my legs." "A doctor and paramedics were already there when I arrived," says Nathan's mum. "All he said to me as they put him in the ambulance was, 'Sorry, Mum'." Three months later, in July 1997, Nathan learned to walk again, this time with artificial legs. And soon after that he was back at school!
