For assembly:

  • 9-12 lasagna noodles
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:

    • In a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat, add the ground beef or Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks (about 5-7 minutes).
    • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan. Sauté until the onion is translucent (about 3-4 minutes).
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Prepare the Ricotta Mixture:

    • In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well until smooth.
  3. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:

    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay them flat on a clean kitchen towel to prevent sticking.
  4. Assemble the Lasagna:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom.
    • Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
    • Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce.
    • Sprinkle a third of the mozzarella cheese on top.
    • Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of noodles topped with meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.
  5. Bake the Lasagna:

    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray).
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
    • Let the lasagna cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
