Canada is bilingual, with English and French being two official languages, but most people speak English at home. You might hear some common Canadian slang words like looney (a dollar coin), chinook (a warm wind that comes over the mountains in winter), and hog-town (a nickname for Toronto). B. Canada is extremely diverse historically and ethnically, so there is no single national culture. The "melting pot" idea from the US is used in Canada as well. The culture of an area usually depends on the language spoken there. Thus, French influences are confined largely to Quebec and New Brunswick. Canada's aboriginal peoples (such as Inuit and others) also keep their unique cultures. Immigrants from all over the world have brought some unique elements of their homelands to Canadian daily life. C. Canadians are generally polite, tolerant, and quite informal. As in any large country, there is a great amount of variation in customs from one region to another. Thus, in the province of Quebec, which has more French influence than the British, it is typical for people to greet each other by kissing each other's cheeks left and right, while in the rest of the country, handshakes are more common. It is important to remember your manners if you want to get on well with Canadian people. For example, if you are invited to someone's home for a meal, it is considered polite to bring a small gift such as a box of chocolates. D. The range of religions practised in Canada is as diverse as its inhabitants, and freedom of religion is a constitutionally protected right. Christianity is the most popular, uniting around 65% of the population. The number of Muslims in Canada is 4.9% and has grown twice in the last ten years. Atheism has also been increasing in recent decades, and around 24% of Canadians now say that they have no religious feelings. E. Canada is home to some vibrant cities and some wonderful man-made attractions, but what sets Canada apart from other destinations is its natural wonders. Anyone who has been to Canada on holidays will have had their breath taken away from just looking at the unique beauty the country offers. From cascading Virginia Falls to the ancient Great Bear Rainforest, and dancing lights in the sky, there are a lot of natural attractions to enjoy. F. In Canada, people from different ethnic groups live together and cooperate. Participating in different festivities of colour, light and music is an important part of life, that unites many Canadians from different backgrounds. Probably the main celebration in Canada is Canada day (July 1st), which is dedicated to the formation of the country in 1867. Some other examples of carnivals are the Quebec Winter Carnival and the Celebration of Light in Vancouver.
