My best friend is Mia.

  • How we first met: We met in seventh grade during a science project. Our tables were next to each other, and we got paired to design a simple machine. We quickly discovered we shared a curiosity for how things work and a love of drawing and doodling during long lab sessions. Our conversations started with the project and then flowed into our hobbies, and we’ve been friends ever since.

  • How often we see each other: We see each other almost every school day. We also text after classes and try to hang out after school a couple of times each week. On weekends we sometimes meet to work on projects, go for a hike, or just grab a bite to eat and chat.

  • What we like to do together:

    • Build and tinker with small robotics kits
    • Draw, paint, or design things together
    • Bake cookies or try out new recipes
    • Play basketball or go for a run
    • Volunteer for community activities or help out at the local library
  • What career your friend will pursue: Mia wants to become a biomedical engineer. She loves math and science, and she enjoys solving real-world problems to help people. She dreams of designing prosthetics and devices that can improve people’s lives.

  • What I would recommend to a teenager who wants to be a good friend:

    • Listen actively and don’t interrupt when they’re talking
    • Be reliable and keep your promises; show up when you say you will
    • Show appreciation and celebrate their successes, big or small
    • Be honest but kind; give constructive feedback without judging
    • Include others and avoid gossip; try to be encouraging
    • Respect boundaries and give space when needed
    • Support their goals and offer help when they’re stressed or unsure
    • Apologize sincerely if you’re wrong and forgive when they are
    • Communicate openly and check in about feelings and plans
    • Do small, thoughtful actions—like a quick message or a note—to show you care

That’s a snapshot of my friendship with Mia.
