F. Dostoyevsky's Memorial Apartment in Moscow F. Dostoyevsky's Memorial Apartment is the writer's only museum in Moscow and the first in the world. Fyodor Mikhailovich spent the first fifteen years of his life here. It is the place where his character took shape. The museum occupies a wing of Mariinskaya hospital. Although Fyodor was born in the opposite wing of the building in 1821, he lived with his parents in the apartment, which is now the museum of the period from 1823 to 1837. There is a memorial plaque on the building. The building inside has never been rebuilt: the walls, the stoves, and the floor structure have remained the way they used to be at the time when the writer lived there. The gate with lions on the arches in front of the entrance to the apartment has been preserved since Dostoyevsky's time. The museum holds authentic memorial furniture pieces of the Dostoyevsky's family, portraits of his parents, immediate ancestors and relatives as well as books. In fact, the family enjoyed reading.
