The Golden Mountains of Altai have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 because of their striking nature and beauty. Here are the protected areas:
- Altai Nature Reserve: the oldest park in the region (founded in 1932). It features tall mountains, dense taiga forests, and rivers like the Chuya and Bashkaus, with rare plants and animals such as cedar trees and the snow leopard.
- Katun Reserve: near the South Chuya Range. It is famous for huge glaciers, the largest being the Berel Glacier. Animals include the maral deer, bears, lynxes, and reindeer.
- Belukha Mountain: the highest peak in Altai, about 4.5 kilometers high. It stays snow-covered all year, and many hikers come here to climb.
- Ukok Plateau: a high plain between the Altai and Sayan mountains. There, archaeologists found the mummy of a Pazyrk culture woman, about 2,000 years old.
Altai attracts visitors with its varied nature: cold meadows, dense forests, clear lakes, and fast rivers. Every year, many people come to see this unique land and feel the power of the mountains.
