Lucas's Summer Job Lucas had always thought that summer was a time to relax, play video games, and hang out with friends. But this summer, his parents had a different plan. They wanted him to get a job to "become more serious". His elder sister Emma had worked at the local café for two summers, but Lucas was not happy about the idea of spending his days serving coffee and washing tables. Still, he knew he had to listen to his parents. After several job interviews, Lucas finally got a job at a small garden centre near his house. It wasn't the type of job he had imagined for a teenager; it was full of dirt, plants, and long hours in the sun. On his first day, he didn't know anything about gardening or plants, and he watered some of the flowers too much. His manager, Mrs. Brown, was patient and kind, but Lucas felt bad every time he made a mistake. Over the next few weeks, he started to understand how to do things right. Mrs. Brown taught him the names of different types of plants, how much water they needed, and even showed him how to plan and create a beautiful garden. All of a sudden, he began to enjoy working outdoors, even on hot days. He got used to the smell of soil and even found it a bit relaxing to water plants after a long day. One morning, while Lucas was arranging some colourful flowers, a woman came up to him asking to help her choose plants for her garden. At first, he was nervous, unsure if he had enough knowledge to help. But as he listened to her talk about the garden she dreamed of, he realized he knew exactly what plants would work best. He suggested sunflowers for a sunny place, lilies for their lovely aroma, and roses for their bright colour. By the end of the summer, Lucas felt surprisingly proud of his work. He had helped dozens of customers, learned to plant flowers, and even saved up some money. His friends laughed at him for "getting all into gardening", but Lucas just laughed together with them. He realized that he had gained more than just some cash -- he had found a skill he was genuinely good at. When school started up again, Lucas felt different. Working at the garden centre had taught him patience, a little creativity, and, yes, he became a little more serious. It was the last summer job he'd expected to enjoy, but it turned out to be exactly what he needed. A. Lukas did NOT want to spend his summer holidays … 1) hanging out with friends. 2) playing video games. 3) serving coffee. 4) relaxing. B. Lucas was going to find a summer job because … 1) his parents wanted him to work in summer. 2) he was tired of spending time with friends. 3) he'd always wanted to make some money. 4) his sister had enjoyed her summer job. C. Lucas did not water the flowers the right way because … 1) he thought it was too sunny and hot and they needed more water. 2) he didn't like his job and did not pay attention to instructions. 3) he didn't know much about gardening and made a mistake. 4) Mrs. Brown did not give him good instructions. D. From the text we know that Lucas watered flowers … 1) at the beginning of his working day. 2) several times during his working day. 3) in the middle of his working day. 4) at the end of his working day. E. Which of the following was NOT something Lucas had done by the end of summer? 1) He made some money. 2) He made more friends. 3) He became more serious. 4) He became good at gardening. Ответ: A B C D E

A. Lukas did NOT want to spend his summer holidays …

  • Обоснование: В тексте прямо сказано, что ему не понравилась идея недели работы: “he didn’t like the idea of spending his days serving coffee and washing tables.”

B. Lucas was going to find a summer job because …

C. Lucas did not water the flowers the right way because …

  • Обоснование: В начале он “watered some of the flowers too much” и в дальнейшем упоминается, что он “didn’t know anything about gardening” на первый день, т.е.

D. From the text we know that Lucas watered flowers …

  • Обоснование: Упоминается именно на первый день: “On his first day, he didn’t know anything about gardening or plants, and he watered some of the flowers too much.”

E. Which of the following was NOT something Lucas had done by the end of summer?

Ответ: A — 3 B — 1 C — 3 D — 1 E — 2
