Every spring in Russia, we celebrate Maslenitsa, a week of sunshine before Lent. The air smells of melted butter and fresh pancakes, called blini, folded with jam, sour cream, or caviar. Friends and families gather in town squares and cozy yards, hosting pancake races, snowball fights, and friendly sled races. Colorful scarves flutter, folk songs echo, and the scent of caramelized sugar lingers as street vendors flip hot blini on iron griddles. We light a straw effigy at the end, symbolizing goodbye to winter and hello to spring. It’s a time to share meals, tell stories, forgive quarrels, and laugh together. Maslenitsa reminds us that warmth and community can outlast even the coldest days.
