Dear Alex,
I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been thinking about you and wanted to tell you a bit about Irkutsk, a city in Siberia that I’ve grown to love from my visits.
Irkutsk sits on the Angara River, where it meets the Irkut River, and it’s not far from Lake Baikal. The city has a rich history as a trading and cultural hub, and you can feel that sense of old-time grandeur in the streets. The historic center is especially charming, with many beautifully preserved wooden houses and churches that give it a distinct, almost magical atmosphere.
The climate is a big part of the experience. Winters are long and very cold, with plenty of snow, while summers are short but pleasantly warm. In winter the city looks almost fairy-tale with ice on the river and soft street lights; in summer the days are long and there’s a relaxed, outdoor vibe.
There’s a lot to explore: museums and theaters, cozy cafes, and markets where locals chat and tell stories about the city’s past. The people are warm and welcoming, which makes it easy to feel at home even as a visitor. And the food? Delicious. You’ll want to try pelmeni (dumplings), hearty borscht, and especially omul, the famous Baikal fish, often smoked and served with rye bread. It’s simple but incredibly satisfying.
If you ever visit, a day trip to Listvyanka by Baikal would be perfect. You can walk along the shore, look out at the clear blue water, and learn more about the lake’s unique ecosystem. It’s a great contrast to the urban pace of Irkutsk itself.
Anyway, I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to. If you’re ever thinking of a trip to Siberia, Irkutsk would be a wonderful place to start. Take care and write back when you can.
Your friend, [Your Name]
