Science studies how the natural world works. Chemistry, physics, and biology are sciences, and other sciences include astronomy, geology, meteorology, computer science, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Technology uses science to create tools, devices, and systems that solve problems and improve our lives. The word technology has two meanings: the set of techniques and processes developed to do things, and the tools and systems created by applying those techniques. Science explains natural facts and processes, while technology explains how to make or use things in practical terms. People say science and technology are linked because scientific discoveries enable new technologies, and new technologies enable better scientific research. Technology can help science by providing instruments, sensors, computing power, data analysis, simulations, and new ways to test hypotheses. Some modern technologies I know include artificial intelligence, smartphones, the Internet of Things, renewable energy technologies, CRISPR gene editing, 3D printing, nanotechnology, autonomous vehicles, quantum computing, and biotechnology. In my view, the most important sciences today are climate science, biology and medicine, physics and materials science, and computer science/AI.
