Do you mean the 555 timer IC (monostable/astable modes) or something else with the number 555?
If you’re studying the 555 timer, here’s a quick refresher and a few practice problems you can try.
Key facts
- Modes:
- Monostable: one-shot pulse. Output goes high for t = 1.1 × R × C (seconds if R in ohms and C in farads).
- Astable: free-running oscillator. Timings:
- High time tH = 0.693 × (RA + RB) × C
- Low time tL = 0.693 × RB × C
- Frequency f = 1 / (tH + tL) = 1.44 / [(RA + 2RB) × C]
- Reference levels: Trigger and Threshold operate around 1/3 Vcc and 2/3 Vcc.
- Pins: Reset pin (active low) should be tied high; Control pin (pin 5) can have a small capacitor (e.g., 0.01 µF) to reduce noise.
Three practice problems
- Monostable timing
- Given R = 100 kΩ and C = 10 µF, what is the output pulse width?
- Solution: t = 1.1 × R × C = 1.1 × 100k × 10e-6 = 1.1 × 1 = 1.1 seconds.
- Astable timing
- Given RA = 1 kΩ, RB = 10 kΩ, C = 100 nF, find the frequency and the high/low times.
- Solution:
- f = 1.44 / [(RA + 2RB) × C] = 1.44 / [(1k + 20k) × 100e-9] = 1.44 / (21k × 100e-9) ≈ 1.44 / 0.0021 ≈ 685 Hz
- tH = 0.693 × (RA + RB) × C = 0.693 × 11k × 100e-9 ≈ 0.000762 s ≈ 0.762 ms
- tL = 0.693 × RB × C = 0.693 × 10k × 100e-9 ≈ 0.000693 s ≈ 0.693 ms
- Design for a target frequency
- Design an astable circuit to run at f = 1 kHz with C = 10 nF. Assume RA = RB for simplicity.
- Solution:
- f = 1.44 / [(RA + 2RB) × C] and with RA = RB, f = 1.44 / [3RB × C].
- Solve for RB: RB = 1.44 / (3 × f × C) = 1.44 / (3 × 1000 × 10e-9) ≈ 48 kΩ.
- So choose RB ≈ 48 kΩ and RA ≈ 48 kΩ (standard values) for about 1 kHz with C = 10 nF.
