Do you mean the 555 timer IC? I can help with that. Here’s a quick refresher, and I can tailor it to your exam:
Modes
- Astable: free-running oscillator (no trigger needed after start)
- Monostable: one-shot timer (triggered by a short pulse)
- Bistable: latch (needs separate set/reset)
Key formulas
- Monostable (one-shot)
- T = 1.1 × R × C (time delay)
- Astable (oscillator)
- High time t_HIGH = 0.693 × (R_A + R_B) × C
- Low time t_LOW = 0.693 × R_B × C
- Period T = t_HIGH + t_LOW = 0.693 × (R_A + 2R_B) × C
- Frequency f = 1 / T = 1.44 / [(R_A + 2R_B) × C]
- Duty cycle D = t_HIGH / T = (R_A + R_B) / (R_A + 2R_B)
- Bistable
- No timing; uses trigger and reset inputs to set/clear the latch
- Monostable (one-shot)
Example
- Design an astable oscillator with f ≈ 1 kHz using C = 10 nF.
- Choose RB = 56 kΩ, solve for RA: RA + 2RB ≈ 1.44 / (f × C) ≈ 1.44 / (1000 × 10e-9) ≈ 144 kΩ
- RA ≈ 144k − 2×56k ≈ 32 kΩ
- Then f ≈ 1 kHz, t_HIGH ≈ 0.693 × (32k + 56k) × 10 nF ≈ 0.69 ms, t_LOW ≈ 0.69 × 56k × 10 nF ≈ 0.39 ms
- Choose RB = 56 kΩ, solve for RA: RA + 2RB ≈ 1.44 / (f × C) ≈ 1.44 / (1000 × 10e-9) ≈ 144 kΩ
- Design an astable oscillator with f ≈ 1 kHz using C = 10 nF.
