Do you mean the number 555, or the 555 timer IC? If you’re studying electronics, here’s a quick refresher on the 555 timer (common for exam questions):

Modes

  • Astable: free-running oscillator (no external trigger, output continuously pulses)
  • Monostable: one-shot pulse (needs a trigger to start a single output pulse)

Key equations

  • Astable
    • f ≈ 1.44 / ((RA + 2RB) * C)
    • T_high = 0.693 * (RA + RB) * C
    • T_low = 0.693 * RB * C
    • Duty cycle D = T_high / (T_high + T_low) = (RA + RB) / (RA + 2RB)
    • Levels: thresholds at 2/3 Vcc and 1/3 Vcc
  • Monostable
    • Output stays high for t ≈ 1.1 * R * C
    • R is the external resistor (connected from Vcc to the timing node), C is the timing capacitor
    • Trigger pulls the input below 1/3 Vcc to start the timing
    • Threshold returns to 1/3 Vcc and discharge transistor pulls the node to ground when done

Example

  • If RA = 1 kΩ, RB = 10 kΩ, C = 100 nF (astable)
    • f ≈ 1.44 / ((1k + 2*10k) * 100e-9) ≈ 1.44 / 0.0021 ≈ 686 Hz
    • T_high ≈ 0.693 * (1k + 10k) * 100e-9 ≈ 0.762 ms
    • T_low ≈ 0.693 * 10k * 100e-9 ≈ 0.693 ms
    • Period ≈ 1.455 ms
