I would tell my foreign friend that Russia is officially called the Russian Federation. It is situated in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Its area is 17.1 million square kilometres. Russia stretches for about 9,000 kilometres from east to west and 5,000 kilometres from north to south.
The capital city is Moscow. The country is divided into republics, krais, oblasts and okrugs. More than 140 million people live in Russia. It is a multinational country with more than 160 ethnic groups. About 80% of the population are Russians, about 4% are Tatars, about 2% are Ukrainians, and about 1% are Bashkirs and Chuvash. There are also many other ethnic groups, such as Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Belarusians, Buryats, Georgians and Yakuts. Russian is the official language, but other languages are spoken too.
