Как выбрать время:

• Past Simple — законченное действие или последовательность действий:
  entered and sat, came and called, founded.
• Past Continuous — действие происходило в определённый момент или было прервано другим действием:
  was watching TV when I called, was playing at 2 o’clock.
• После while часто употребляется Past Continuous, если действия происходят одновременно.
• Глаголы know и need обычно не употребляются в Continuous, поэтому: knew, needed.
