Правило

В прошедшем времени:

• was — с I, he, she, it и существительным в единственном числе;
• were — с you, we, they и существительным во множественном числе.

В настоящем времени:

• I am;
• he/she/it is;
• you/we/they are.

Проверка: слова yesterday, last year, last month, last July указывают на прошедшее время, поэтому нужны was/were.
