Как понять правило

Past Continuous образуется так:

\[ \text{was/were} + \text{глагол с окончанием } -ing \]

• was — с I, he, she, it: she was reading, the sun was shining;
• were — с you, we, they: children were looking, actors were telling.

После when часто стоит действие в Past Simple, которое произошло во время другого, продолжавшегося действия:

• When the telephone rang, dad was watering the flowers.

В упражнении 4 сомнение выражается вопросом:

• Mike was… → Was he?
• Mary was… → Was she?

Все формы проверены: вспомогательный глагол согласуется с подлежащим, а основной глагол имеет окончание -ing.
