How it works:

• a bit, slightly, a little show a small difference;
• a lot, far, much show a big difference;
• short adjectives usually take -er: short → shorter, fit → fitter;
• adjectives ending in -y change y to i: friendly → friendlier;
• longer adjectives use more: suntanned → more suntanned.

All the highlighted phrases contain a modifier + a comparative adjective.
