Completed text:
Yesterday, while I was cleaning the attic, I came across some old photos from school, so I thought of you! We have both changed in the last few years!
I have been studying really hard lately because I really want to win the scholarship. I haven’t told you about the last time you were in your town. I rarely go out because I have so much work to do. I didn’t even go to Maria’s birthday party last Friday.
I am thinking of taking a break and coming to visit you next week. What do you think? I have already asked my mum and she has agreed.
I think I will have an early night. I have just finished an essay on Hamlet and I feel really tired!
Key rules:
- was cleaning + came: a long action was interrupted by a short action.
- have changed, haven’t told, have already asked, has agreed, have just finished: Present Perfect connects past actions with the present.
- have been studying: the activity started earlier and is still continuing; the clue is lately.
- go, want, feel, do you think: Present Simple for habits, states and opinions.
- didn’t go, were: Past Simple for finished past events.
- am thinking: Present Continuous for a current plan or intention.
- will have: Future Simple after I think.
