7b. Project: Victory Day
A special day to remember war veterans in Russia is Victory Day. It is celebrated on 9 May.
This day marks the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. The war ended in 1945. Victory Day is important because millions of soldiers and civilians died, and many veterans fought bravely for their country. People remember both those who returned home and those who never came back.
On this day, people take part in military parades and concerts. They lay flowers at war memorials, visit cemeteries and observe a minute of silence. Families look at old photographs, read letters from the front and tell children about their relatives. People also congratulate veterans and thank them for their courage. In the evening, many towns and cities organise fireworks.
Victory Day teaches us to respect veterans, remember history and value peace. I think it is an important day because it connects different generations and reminds us that peace comes at a very high price.
