Back to Life!

Today I’d like to talk about the possibility of bringing extinct animals back to life.

Scientists once managed to clone the Pyrenean ibex, a wild mountain goat. They used DNA from the animal and eggs from a domestic goat. Unfortunately, the clone lived for only seven minutes. This experiment made people wonder if dinosaurs could be cloned too.

Normally, scientists think that dinosaur DNA is too old because dinosaurs disappeared more than 65 million years ago. However, in 2003, a thigh bone of a T. rex broke while Jack Horner’s team was excavating its skeleton. A student found organic material inside the bone. This suggested that DNA might survive longer than scientists had believed.

Jack Horner thinks that cloning a dinosaur may be possible one day. However, scientists would first need to create a complete genetic map, and this could take decades.

Another scientist, Hans Larsson, studies dinosaur DNA in birds. He discovered that a chicken embryo has sixteen small tail bones, but only five when it hatches. By changing a chicken’s genes, he managed to make its tail three bones longer. He calls the possible result a “dinochicken”.

The idea is very exciting, but I think scientists should carefully consider the consequences before bringing dinosaurs back to life.
