Maslenitsa: Russia’s Pancake Week

Every year, usually in February or March, Russians celebrate Maslenitsa, a lively week that says goodbye to winter and welcomes spring. It takes place all over Russia and gives families and friends a chance to get together.

Before the celebration, people decorate streets and squares with bright ribbons and make a straw figure of winter. Families buy flour, butter and jam, while musicians and dancers rehearse. Many cafés and homes prepare plenty of bliny, thin Russian pancakes with sweet or savoury fillings.

During the festival, people wear colourful clothes, listen to traditional music and visit fairs. They eat bliny, play games, compete in tug-of-war and enjoy concerts. In some towns, there are horse rides and snowball fights. At the end, everyone watches the straw figure being burned, symbolising the end of winter.

Maslenitsa makes people feel happy, energetic and united. It is one of my favourite Russian celebrations because it combines delicious food, exciting activities and old traditions. If you visit Russia in spring, you should definitely experience it!

Thanksgiving: A Family Celebration

(148 words)

Every year, on the fourth Thursday of November, families across the United States celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a special holiday when people give thanks for their families, friends and good things in life.

Before the celebration, people decorate their homes with autumn leaves, pumpkins and candles. Family members prepare a large dinner together. The traditional meal usually includes roast turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn and pumpkin pie.

Cheese Rolling: A Wild English Tradition

(about 150 words)

Every year, on the last Monday in May, people gather at Cooper’s Hill near the English village of Brockworth for one of the strangest festivals in the world: the Cheese Rolling Festival. Its history goes back many years, and today it attracts participants and spectators from many countries.

At the start of the event, organisers send a round Double Gloucester cheese down the very steep hill. A few seconds later, brave competitors run after it as fast as they can. The first person to reach the bottom wins the cheese. The race lasts only a few seconds, but it is difficult and sometimes dangerous because runners can fall and roll down the hill.

Spectators cheer, take photographs and enjoy the exciting atmosphere. Some participants wear funny costumes. I would like to watch this festival because chasing cheese down a hill is a truly unusual way to celebrate, although I would prefer to stay safely at the bottom!

The Night of the Radishes: Mexico’s Strange Tradition

(151 words)

Every year, on 23 December, the Mexican city of Oaxaca holds one of the most unusual festivals in the world: the Night of the Radishes. Although it lasts only one evening, it attracts thousands of visitors.

In the evening, the sculptures are displayed on decorated tables in the city centre. Visitors walk around, admire the tiny details and take photographs. Judges choose the most original works, and the winners receive prizes.

There is also traditional music, dancing and delicious Mexican food. The festival is surprising because an ordinary vegetable becomes a real work of art.
