Celebrations Around the World
Maslenitsa is one of the most colourful celebrations in Russia. It takes place in February or March, before Lent, and welcomes spring. During the week before the festival, people decorate their homes, prepare delicious food and practise traditional songs and dances. On the final day, families gather in town squares. They wear bright clothes, eat pancakes with honey or jam, play games and watch folk performances. Children also ride down snowy hills and enjoy cheerful outdoor fairs with their friends. At sunset, people burn a large straw figure symbolising winter. Everyone feels joyful and united. Maslenitsa is a warm, exciting tradition that brings people together and makes them look forward to spring.
