Maslenitsa: A Week of Spring and Joy
Every year, at the end of winter, Russians celebrate Maslenitsa, one of the most colourful festivals in my country. It lasts for a whole week and celebrates the coming of spring.
During Maslenitsa, families and friends meet to eat thin golden pancakes called blini. They can be served with honey, jam, sour cream or caviar. In many towns, people enjoy folk music, dancing, competitions and sledging. Children and adults often take part in games and try to climb a tall wooden pole for a prize. On the final day, people burn a large straw figure of Winter. This tradition symbolises saying goodbye to cold weather and welcoming spring. Afterwards, many people ask one another for forgiveness, so the holiday also has a warm, friendly meaning.
I like Maslenitsa because it brings people together and fills the streets with laughter, music and delicious food. It is a wonderful way to celebrate Russian traditions.
