The Ancient Olympic Games are more than 2,500 years old. According to a Greek legend, Hercules, the son of Zeus, started them. The first known records date back to 776 BC. The Games took place every four years for more than 1,000 years, until the Romans stopped them in 394 AD.

The Greeks considered the Games very important. They measured time by Olympiads and even stopped wars during the competitions. At first, there was only one event — a 183-metre running race. Only men could participate. Later, the Spartans added more sports, and the winners became heroes in their country.
