How to Be Polite in Russia
When you meet someone for the first time, smile and say “Здравствуйте” (Zdravstvuyte). It is a polite greeting. With friends or people your age, you can say “Привет” (Privet). In a formal situation, people often shake hands, but you should wait for the other person to offer their hand. With an older person or a teacher, use their first name and patronymic.
For small talk, you can ask about the weather, school, hobbies or the journey. You should listen carefully and avoid very personal questions at first.
If you visit a Russian home, arrange your visit in advance and arrive on time. It is polite to bring a small gift, such as sweets or flowers. If you bring flowers, choose an odd number. You should take off your shoes at the door, accept tea or food politely, and thank your host before leaving. Follow these simple rules and you will make a good impression!
