Как понять принцип

У глагола look значение меняется в зависимости от второго слова:

  • look after — заботиться о ком-либо;
  • look at — смотреть на;
  • look for — искать;
  • look forward to — с нетерпением ждать;
  • look into — расследовать, изучать вопрос;
  • look like — быть похожим;
  • look out — быть осторожным;
  • look round — оглянуться;
  • look through — просмотреть, изучить;
  • look up — искать в справочнике или поднять глаза;
  • look upon someone as — считать кого-либо кем-либо.

Важно: в сочетании look forward to слово to является предлогом, поэтому после него ставится существительное или форма с -ing:
look forward to your visit, look forward to meeting you.

В упражнении 2 полиция investigates records, поэтому используется look into, а газету и книгу можно внимательно просматривать — look through. В предложении 3.10 look up означает «улучшаться»: things will look up.
