39. They moved to the countryside. 40. He felt confused and scared. 41. No, he didn't. Philip left before Tom could thank him. 42. He lost his way in that same forest and never came back. 43. Because he thought a ghost had helped him, so he was frightened (he couldn't understand who the boy was).
Принцип: ответ всегда уже есть в тексте
Задание «Read the text and answer the questions» — это не сочинение. Нужно найти в тексте предложение с теми же словами (или синонимами), что в вопросе, и переделать его в ответ. Работаем так:
Шаг 1. Выдели в вопросе «ключ» — слово, по которому будешь искать.

Шаг 2. Найди это место в тексте и выпиши нужный кусок.
- 39: «…my family left the big city and moved to the countryside» → They moved to the countryside.
- 40: «I was confused and scared because it was almost dark» → He felt confused and scared.
- 41: «Philip said goodbye and left before I could thank him» → значит, не поблагодарил: No, he didn't.
- 42: «Eight years ago, a young boy named Philip MacMann lost his way in that same forest and never came back» → почти дословно переносим в ответ.
- 43: «Did a ghost help me? I couldn't sleep that night, or the next» → Because he thought a ghost had helped him.
Шаг 3. Подстрой форму ответа под тип вопроса:
- Where…? → место: to the countryside;
- How did he feel…? → прилагательные о чувствах: confused and scared;
- Did…? → сначала No, he didn't, потом короткое пояснение из текста;
- What happened…? → событие в Past Simple: He lost his way and never came back;
- Why…? → Because + причина.
Шаг 4. Проверь себя. Подставь ответ обратно к вопросу и посмотри, не противоречит ли он тексту:
- «Did Tom thank Philip?» — No ✔ (в тексте прямо: «before I could thank him»);
- «What happened to Philip MacMann?» — lost his way, never came back ✔ — это и есть загадка рассказа: мальчик, который вывел Тома, «погиб» здесь 8 лет назад.
Копировать целое предложение не обязательно — хватит его главной части, но время (Past Simple) и лицо (he/they) должны совпадать с вопросом.
