3. From outside, it looked like an old, ruined house behind a high wall with tall iron gates. The roof had fallen in, the windows were dirty and cracked, and the garden was wild with ivy-covered trees.
4. Kathy climbed up the wall and jumped into the garden, then cleared stones and earth from the front door and turned the brass handle. The door opened just enough for her to get inside.
5. After Kathy sat at the table, a plate of hot food appeared. She ate it, and the plate disappeared. Then strawberries and cream appeared. A voice said their time together was not over and invited her back; she accepted and left through the front door into the sunshine.
6. The others did not believe her. They looked at each other, joked that the bump on her head was serious, and laughed. One said he would go next time for free food.
