Nature’s Strangest Creatures

Our planet is full of animals that look like characters from science fiction. If I had to choose the most unusual ones, I would pick the axolotl, the glass frog and the blue-ringed octopus. Each is strange in a different way.

The axolotl is a Mexican salamander that never grows up completely. It remains gilled throughout its life and uses feathery gills to breathe underwater. It is nocturnal, so it is most active in darkness, and its long tail has fins that help it swim. Females lay eggs in water. Its calm smile makes it look friendly, but its body mixes fish-like and amphibian features. That combination makes it strange.

The glass frog is even more surprising because its skin is transparent on its belly. This lets us see its internal organs. It has an arboreal lifestyle, living on leaves above streams. It is nocturnal and often becomes active after rain. Like many frogs, females lay eggs, usually on leaves over water. A see-through amphibian living in trees is strange enough, but seeing its heart beat makes it almost unbelievable.

The blue-ringed octopus is small yet dangerous. It has eight tentacles and is venomous; one bite can be deadly. It is nocturnal, hiding in crevices during the day and hunting at night. Its bright blue rings appear only when it feels threatened. This proves that size has nothing to do with danger.

These creatures may seem odd, but their unusual features help them survive. That is why I consider them the most unusual animals on our planet.
