Learning a foreign language in the modern world is one of the most important components of success for a modern person. Knowledge of at least one foreign language broadens one’s horizons and allows one to learn about the culture and customs of another nation. Every person wants to be successful and fortunate in business. In this case, knowledge of a foreign language is necessary. Firstly, it provides additional knowledge; secondly, employers give preference to a specialist who speaks a foreign language. However, this is not the most important thing either. The main point is the opportunity to plunge into the world of the mysterious and incomprehensible, the opportunity to communicate with people and to come into contact with a different layer of worldview and mentality. As is well known, language is a social value. Its inclusion in the school curriculum is a social demand of society.
One of the features of the functioning of English is its use by many nations as a national, state and official literary language. English is the most widely used language on Earth. Today, researchers estimate that the number of English speakers ranges between 1.2 and 1.5 billion people. It is used as a native, second and foreign language.
English is one of the official languages of the United Nations, UNESCO and the World Health Organization (WHO), and it is the official and working language of many international meetings of organizations such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Council and NATO.
The main functions of English as an international language, or the spheres of its use, can be summarized as follows:
- official-diplomatic;
- official state regulation;
- official business (in business, trade, transport and communications);
- educational;
- informational (in science, the media, the Internet, sports and medicine);
- entertainment (film and video production, pop music);
- advertising (labels, trademarks).
