Stress and Anti-stress
Stress is a common reaction to a difficult situation. When we are under pressure, our nervous system reacts: our heart beats faster, our breathing becomes shallow, and our body produces adrenaline. Common causes of stress are exams, too much homework, a heavy workload and problems with friends. The consequences can be physical and emotional: tiredness, forgetfulness, negative emotions and difficulty concentrating. A little stress can help us get ready for action, but too much stress is harmful.
We can deal with stress if we take action. I use the A–B–C plan. A is for action: I break my tasks down into smaller steps and do one thing at a time in order of priority. If my workload is too heavy, I ask a friend or my parents for help. B is for bear it: I try to think positively, breathe deeply and not be too dramatic about things I cannot change. C is for cope: I go for a walk, do sport or listen to music to take my mind off my problems. Sleep, exercise and healthy eating are essential, and humour and a positive attitude also help. In my opinion, problems should not rule our lives.
