Полный текст:

Last Saturday, we had a party to celebrate the end of term. Charlie, Harry and I invited all our friends. There were lots of people there. Many of them arrived with some food or drink. My friend Gemma played the piano. Everyone had so much fun. We were very happy because the holidays were starting.

Как понять правило

Наречия частотности — always, usually, sometimes, never — обычно ставятся:

  • перед обычным глаголом:
    They always sit by the door.
    Beth never goes shopping.

  • после глагола be (am / is / are / was / were):
    Dora is sometimes hungry.
    They are usually at home.
    I am never late.

С never не нужно ещё одно отрицание: говорим Beth never goes, а не Beth doesn’t never go.

Past Simple образуется так:

  • правильные глаголы: + -ed
    invite → invited, arrive → arrived, play → played;
  • неправильные нужно запомнить:
    have → had, be → was / were.

В предложении There were lots of people используем were, потому что people здесь во множественном числе.
