  4. didn’t recognize
  5. was looking
  6. sat down
  7. wasn’t

Полный текст:

I arrived at the scene of the crime at exactly 4.23 am. It was very quiet. There were two bodies; a man and a woman. The man was Smith but I didn’t recognize the woman. While I was looking for clues Smith’s wife arrived. She sat down and smiled. Her husband was dead but she wasn’t sad. ‘I hated him,’ she said. She started shouting; ‘I didn’t like his house,’ she said. ‘I didn’t want to be his wife’. She took off her gloves. There was blood on her hands. I said, ‘We need to talk’.

Почему так:

  • Past Simple — для законченных действий в прошлом: arrived, sat down, smiled, said.
  • Past Continuous — для действия, которое происходило в момент прошлого: While I was looking for clues… — я искал улики, и тут пришла жена Смита.
  • Глаголы состояния — recognize, like — обычно не ставятся в Continuous, поэтому didn’t recognize, didn’t like.
  • It was — потому что it единственное число; There were two bodies — потому что two bodies множественное число.
  • She wasn’t sad — she единственное число.
  • took off her gloves — «сняла перчатки»; took up означало бы «начала заниматься чем-то / заняла место».
