  1. The word "Oxbridge" is a combination of the words "Oxford" and "Cambridge".
  2. Oxford is the oldest university; it is about 900 years old (teaching there began in the 12th century).
  3. In 1209 some scholars fled from Oxford to Cambridge.
  4. In Cambridge they founded a new university.
  5. Since those times their academic standards and reputation have been very high.
  6. Now these universities are competing for the best students and the best professors.
  7. Today Oxford consists of 39 colleges, and Cambridge consists of 31 colleges.
  8. The universities house about 40,000 students.
  9. Oxbridge students are striving to maintain the high standards of education and the old traditions.

The word "Oxbridge" is… Oxford is… In 1209… There they… Since then… Today… That is why Oxbridge students…

  1. Yes, I would like to study in the UK, because British universities give a strong academic base and their degrees are recognised all over the world. The only problem is the cost, so I would need a scholarship. / No, I wouldn't: tuition fees and living costs are very high, and I would rather study closer to home.
  2. Oxford and Cambridge are always at the top of the academic league tables because they are very old and keep centuries-old traditions; they select the strongest students and invite the best professors; they teach in small groups; they have rich libraries and laboratories; and they compete with each other all the time, so neither wants to fall behind.

  • истории Оксбриджа — 800 лет (а «более 900 лет назад» — это про начало университета в Оксфорде);
  • колледжей — 70 вместе у Оксфорда и Кембриджа (не 39 + 31);
  • студентов — 35 000 (не 40 000);
University Boat Race.

Готовый summary (задание 11)

Oxbridge is a made-up word that combines "Oxford" and "Cambridge", though, properly speaking, the two universities are just part of England's university system. Their "dreaming spires" and "the backs" are iconic, and 800 years of history have shown their staying-power and given them the two most distinguished graduates' lists in the world. The oldest university in the English-speaking world began in Oxford more than 900 years ago; in 1209 scholars fleeing Oxford found themselves in Cambridge, where they set up another university to rival the first. Though very independent of each other, the two are known by a single word: Oxbridge. Over the centuries their collegiate structures have grown and they have reflected changes in society (the first women arrived in the 20th century, for example), but their prestige and rivalry have been steady: they compete for the top of the academic league tables and, far more importantly, in the annual University Boat Race. Today the 70 colleges that make up the two universities house some 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students from the UK and all over the world, and they are striving to maintain the standards in which Oxbridge takes such pride.

  1. "Oxbridge" = made-up combination of Oxford + Cambridge.
800 years of rich history (staying-power, stories and traditions, best graduates' lists).
  3. Начало — the oldest university in the English-speaking world began in Oxford more than 900 years ago.
  4. 1209 год — scholars fleeing Oxford found themselves in Cambridge.
  5. Что создали — set up another university to rival the first.
  6. Что их объединяет — very independent, but known by a single word: Oxbridge.
  7. Что изменилось / не изменилось — collegiate structures developed, society changed (first women in the 20th century); prestige and rivalry have been steady.
  8. За что соревнуются — the top of the academic league tables and the annual University Boat Race.
70 colleges, some 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Связки между предложениями (though, moreover, in 1209, over the centuries, today) — то, что отличает summary от списка ответов.
