Short answers

  1. Pedagogy is the science of education and upbringing — of teaching, learning and the purposeful development of a person through education. In a broader sense it is also the art and practice of educating and teaching.

  2. Subject of pedagogy — education as a specially organised, purposeful process (upbringing, teaching and learning together), i.e. the laws by which social experience is passed on to the younger generation and taken in by it.

  3. Object of pedagogy — the person (pupil, learner, and the teacher too) in the process of education and upbringing; more broadly, the pedagogical process itself as it happens in school, family and society.

  4. Main aim — to develop a well-rounded, harmonious personality: to help a person take in culture and social experience and become an independent, responsible, capable human being. In a narrower, practical sense — to organise education and upbringing effectively.

  5. Tasks of pedagogy:

  • studying the laws of upbringing, teaching and education;
  • working out the content, forms, methods and means of teaching and upbringing;
  • designing and forecasting how education systems develop;
  • developing teaching technologies and criteria for checking results;
  • studying, generalising and spreading good pedagogical experience;
  • preparing and improving teachers' skills.
  1. Role of a teacher — organiser of the educational process, source of culture and knowledge, mentor and guide, model of behaviour, diagnostician and evaluator, partner of pupils and their parents. The modern teacher does not just "hand over" facts but creates conditions in which pupils act and develop.

  2. Why pedagogy is important — education is the main way culture and social experience pass from generation to generation. Pedagogy makes this process purposeful and effective: it shapes personality, prepares pupils for life and work, and through those pupils supports the development of society, economy and science.

Key logic behind the answers

Almost every science answers the same set of questions, so remember the chain:

science → object → subject → aim → tasks.

  • Object is the wide area of reality a science takes up (for pedagogy — a person in education, the pedagogical process).
  • Subject is the narrow, specific side of that object the science studies (for pedagogy — education as a purposeful process, its laws).
  • Aim is the expected result (a developed personality, effective education).
  • Tasks are the concrete steps towards the aim.

Most mistakes here come from swapping object and subject: object = what area (people in education), subject = what precisely is studied there (the laws and process of education).

Notice also the word upbringing in English pedagogy books: it means forming the personality (values, habits, behaviour), while teaching is about knowledge and skills. "Education" is often used to cover both — that's why the answers repeat the pair "upbringing and teaching".

Check yourself

  • Can you repeat the same seven points about another science (e.g. psychology) using the "object → subject → aim → tasks" chain? If yes, you have understood the scheme, not just memorised the text.
  • Can you explain in one sentence the difference between object and subject without looking at the page? If you can, you're ready for a similar question in a test.
