Yesterday was an interesting day! I had visitors. I was sleeping when they arrived. While they were exploring my tomb, I woke up. An old man and a boy were reading hieroglyphics and a girl was putting on my necklace. I was trying to help her when the boy saw me and screamed! It was strange because I wasn't trying to scare them! I wanted to help.
Как это понять:
Здесь противопоставляются два прошедших времени:
- Past Continuous — длительное действие: was/were + глагол с -ing;
- Past Simple — короткое действие, которое произошло на фоне длительного.
Поэтому:
- 2 when — «я спал, когда они пришли»: сон был длительным, приход — коротким;
- 3 were — they were exploring: «они» — множественное число;
- 4 reading — were reading hieroglyphics: читали иероглифы;
- 5 was — a girl was putting on: «девочка» — единственное число;
- 6 when — I was trying ... when the boy saw me: та же схема, что в пункте 2;
- 7 wasn't — отрицательная форма Past Continuous: I wasn't trying to scare them — «я не пыталась их напугать». Сокращение wasn't считается одним словом.
Проверка: в каждом пропуске действительно одно слово, а формы was/were согласованы с подлежащим.
