My Favourite Literary Hero: Masha Mironova

My favourite literary hero is Marya Ivanovna Mironova, one of the main characters in Alexander Pushkin’s novel The Captain’s Daughter. She is the daughter of the commandant of the Belogorsk fortress and the young woman whom Pyotr Grinyov loves.

Masha is about eighteen. She is a round-faced, rosy-cheeked girl with light-brown hair smoothly combed behind her ears. Her appearance is simple and pleasant, not bright or showy. Her modest manner and shy smile make her look sincere and kind.

Masha’s character is even more attractive than her appearance. At first she seems timid and silent, but in difficult situations she shows real courage. She refuses to marry Grinyov without his parents’ blessing because she does not want to ruin his life. When her parents are killed and she is left alone, she does not give up. Later she goes to the Empress to save Grinyov, and her honesty and love help her succeed.

I admire Masha because she combines gentleness with inner strength. She is loyal, kind and brave, and she proves that true courage does not need loud words. That is why she is my favourite character in the novel.
