Как понять принцип

В Past Simple у правильных глаголов прибавляется -ed:
miss → missed, collect → collected.

У неправильных глаголов нужно брать вторую форму из таблицы:
eat → ate, see → saw, drive → drove.

Слова last summer показывают завершённое действие в прошлом, поэтому здесь нужен Past Simple.

Проверка: во всех утверждениях после They стоит вторая форма глагола; вспомогательный did в утвердительных предложениях не нужен.

Отдельно про два глагола:
to found — «основывать», поэтому founded (не путать с find → found).
lie in the sun — «лежать/загорать на солнце», поэтому lay (lie — lay — lain).
