You have received an email from your English-speaking pen-friend Rob. Subject Computer. ...My mother thinks I'm getting dependent on computer and doesn't want to admit that there are a lot of other ways to use a computer, not just for the games. And what does computer mean to you. Do you find much time to play games (what kind of them)? Does it help you in your studies?..

Dear Rob,

Thank you for your latest message – it's always good to hear from you! The subject of computers is definitely a hot topic, and I can understand your mother's concerns. However, it's true that computers have a multitude of functions beyond just gaming.

For me, the computer is an essential tool that extends far beyond play. It's integral to most of what I do, especially in terms of studying and organizing my life. With the computer, I have access to a wealth of knowledge through online databases, educational platforms, and research papers, which are all at my fingertips, ready to assist me in my academic pursuits. Also, word processing and presentation software have become the backbone of how I prepare my assignments and projects.

In addition to studies, I use my computer for a lot of other productive activities such as learning new skills through online courses, managing my schedule, and keeping in touch with friends and family through emails and social media – much like our correspondence!

As for gaming, I certainly enjoy it, but I'm mindful of balancing my time. I tend to lean towards strategic games and puzzles, as I find they are quite good for improving cognitive skills such as problem-solving and decision-making. However, these gaming sessions are more of a reward I give myself after a good study session or the completion of a task.

Do you remember mentioning that computers can be used for creative pursuits as well? Well, I totally agree! I've been dabbling in some graphic design and video editing, just for fun and also to enhance my skillset. It's amazing how much creativity can be unleashed through the different software available these days.

When it comes to helping in studies, I can't stress enough how much my computer aids my learning. Whether it's by using educational software, attending virtual classes, or collaborating online with classmates on group assignments, it has become an indispensable tool for my academic success.

Your mom has a point that it's possible to become too dependent on computers, but as with everything, moderation is key. There are indeed many enriching and productive ways to use a computer if we make a conscious effort to do so. Maybe you could show your mom some of the interesting things you can do on your computer that contribute to your development and education?

How about you, Rob? Have you tried to explain all the positive aspects of computer usage to your mom? Maybe you could teach her to use it for something she enjoys, which might help her see the benefits too!

Looking forward to your next email and hearing more about your thoughts on this!

Best wishes, [Your Name]
