As the results of the revolution didn't satisfy anybody in the country the Monarchy was restored in 1660, The period between 1660 and 1688 ald known as the period of Restoration, In 1688 Parliament worked out the Bill of Rights which put the royal power under the control of Parliament, The country became a constitutional monarchy. The political struggle in the country found its reflection in the publication of the news pamphlets and political pamphlets, At the same time journalism began to develop. The English people took great interest in the political struggle, That's why they liked pamphlets which not only described events but explained them, The pamphlets were usually written in prose, Satirical ballads were also popular. One of the greatest authors of pamphlets was John Milton, He was a poet and a political fighter for the cause of Cromwell. John Milton was born in1608 in London, He was a well-educated man who knew Latin, Greek, French, Italian and Spanish, foreign literature, He was fond of music and theatre and dreamt of writing a great work of poetry, However, he gave up his plans when the Republican Government headed by Cromwell needed his help, He worked so much that at the age of 43 became blind. Only after that he returned to poetry, He dictated his poems to his daughters, His greatest work "Paradise Lost" was completed in 1667. It is the best long poem in the literature of England, The poem tells us the story of Satan who was cast down to the Hell but who returned to Paradise in the form of a serpent and made Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, After that Paradise was lost for them, The musical language of the poem and its noble spirit make it a masterpiece of English literature.
