    A trip to Thailand

I have always been interested in various cultures especially those completely alien to us. Thus, imagine my delight when my father 30 ______ me that he was taking us on a holiday to Bangkok and from there to visit a remote tribe that lives about 200 kilometers north of the capital city. As my father explained, the tribe lives an isolated life and the members are cut 31 ______ from the rest of the world in terms of their unique and even weird cultural practices.

During our trip I have noticed that the Thai people are very friendly and their greetings are very 32 ______ to the Indians’. For example, when they meet you they bring their palms together in a prayer-like position and bend their bodies a little as a way of welcoming and acknowledging you. It would definitely 33 ______ you feel as an honored guest. At first, I was rather 34 ______ by these greeting traditions which seemed so unusual and respectful to me. Surprisingly, soon I got used to doing that myself and 35 ______ this procedure during my entire trip to Thailand. We spent only two fantastic days in Bangkok before heading 36______ the remote village which was going to be the most exciting time of our lives, dad promised. We were excited and could not wait seeing everything with our own eyes!

    The man on the trail

It was a cold grey day when the man walked into the main Yukon trail. He climbed the snow-covered river bank where a trail went through the pine forest. It was a high bank, and the man paused to breathe at the top and 30 _______ at the sky. It was nine o’clock in the morning. There was no sun or even the promise of sunshine, 31 _______ there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day, but the sun was absent from the sky. This fact did not worry the man because he could hardly 32 _______ a day when he had seen the sun.

The man had come a long way alone, and he was really proud 33 _______ himself. The old man from the village warned him how cold it sometimes got in this country. He said that no man should travel alone in this season.  Despite all the problems on the way, the man 34 _______ to save himself.

The Yukon River was hidden under three feet of ice with as many feet of snow on top. It was all pure white. North and south, as far as the eye could see, it was white. There was only a thin dark line that curved to the south. This dark line was the trail – the main trail. It led south 500 miles to the Chilcoot Pass. It led north 75 miles to Dawson and still farther on to the north a thousand miles more. However, all this – the distant trail, no sun in the sky, and the great cold – had no 35 _______ on the man. It was not because he was long 36 _______ with it. On the contrary, he was a newcomer in the land, and this was his first winter.

    The effect of the temperature

Many people believe that office conditions can influence our work. For a 30______ time achieving a comfortable room temperature in hot climates was a constant struggle. Research discovered an obvious fact: finding an office temperature to 31 ______ everyone all the time is basically impossible. “Part of the problem is trying to work out the “correct” temperature. It depends 32 _______ what you’re measuring,” said researcher David House.

One study 33 ______ at the impact of the room temperature on worker productivity, by tracking the activity of managers in an office. 34 ______ it measured the activity of just nine women, the results were impressive. At 25°C they were typing non-stop with an error rate of just 10%. When the temperature dropped to 20°C, they were half as productive, more than doubling the number of mistakes.

But it’s not quite that simple. When students in the other study were asked to solve a math problem in either a cool or a warm room, the group in the cooler room 35 ______ in this task twice as often. It means that complex decisions are more difficult when we’re warm. When the temperature is above 27°C, we’re not so good at mathematics.

In fact, the room temperature can do more than influence your productivity  it can change the way you think. Warm environments are better for creative thinking, while cooler workplaces are thought to 36 ______ people active during repetitive or monotonous tasks.

Cats leave their mark on centuries of books

Once, an academic Emir Filipović was researching a medieval Italian manuscript. It was a book which he 30_______ from the State Library Archives. He discovered that the manuscript was stained with inky cat paw prints. The discovery has placed at the centre of a social media whirl, and he says he’s still surprised 31_______ how popular the photograph has proved to be.

“I 32_______ out that one of the main reasons why people had a positive response to it is down to the fact that it makes you imagine the scene in your head when the cat jumped onto the book. This especially 33_______ to cat owners, who are familiar with such typical cases, but also to people who do not own pets since they can still identify with the unfortunate writer,” Filipović says.

“One other important thing is that some people 34_______ to associate the past times with history as a boring school subject focused on politics and wars. They forget that the past was full of ‘normal’ everyday events like today, and that 35_______ people who lived in the past were not much different from us. This picture with the cat paw prints 36_______ everybody about it.”

The cat owners know how annoying it is to have a purring cat trying to climb onto our keyboards while we’re working, and I love the thought of a medieval writer being similarly irritated.

    Smart homes

The beginning of the 21st century saw a revolution in home-living with new technology changing the places where we live, and it seems technology could be changing our homes again. A research 30_________ out by Johann Siau, Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Engineering and Technology, builds on the University’s InterHome project – 31_________ at creating a home that monitors people living at home who are ill or elderly.

‘We’ve developed a wrist-band type device,’ says Johann Siau, ‘which allows us to monitor the condition of an elderly person, or 32_________ is wearing the device. It allows us to collect data of a person, to find out if the person has fallen or is away from where they are 33_________ to be. It connects an elderly person with an assisted-living type device with the InterHome.’ The assisted-living project is part of the University’s wider InterHome project, which is the development of a smart house.

The InterHome is not just a prototype or a vehicle for research, it’s a study tool where students from a range of scientific disciplines 34_________ to learn and develop technology. The InterHome incorporates the latest broadband technology, mobile data and communication. Researchers and students make sure all the technology works together. It requires a variety of skills from students – electronic engineers, computer students, design students. ‘The current plan we are elaborating 35_________ is a smart home project in Watford with some commercial companies,’ says Johann Siau. ‘We are 36_________ at how a smarter home can provide extra value services.’

For years video games have been criticised for making people 30________  more antisocial or depressed. But now researchers are finding that games can actually change us for the better and improve 31________  our body and mind.

Games can help to develop physical skills. A study of surgeons who do microsurgery in Boston found that those who played video games were 27% faster and made 37% fewer errors than those who didn't. Vision is also improved, particularly telling the difference between shades of grey. This is useful for driving at night, piloting a plane or reading X-rays.

Games also benefit a variety of brain functions, including decision-making. It was also found that the best gamers can make choices and act on them up to six times a second, four times 32________  fast as most people. In another study by researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, experienced gamers were shown to be able to pay attention to more than six things at once without getting confused, compared with the four that most people can normally keep in mind.

There is also 33________  evidence that gaming can help with psychological problems. At the University of Auckland in New Zealand, researchers asked 94 young people diagnosed with depression to play a 3D fantasy game and in many cases, the game reduced symptoms of depression more than conventional treatment. Another research team at Oxford University found that playing Tetris shortly after exposure to something 34________  upsetting – in the experiment, a film of traumatic scenes of injury and death was used – can actually prevent people having disturbing flashbacks.

The effects are not always 35________  positive, however. Indiana University researchers carried out brain scans on young men and found evidence that violent games can alter brain function after as little as a week of play, affecting regions in the brain associated with emotional control and causing more aggressive behaviour in the player. Thus, 36________  beneficial nor harmful effects can be taken for granted. But Daphne Bavelier, one of the most experienced researchers in the field, says that the violent action games that often worry parents most may actually have the strongest beneficial effect on the brain. In the future, we may see many treatments for physical and neurological problems which incorporate the playing of video games.
