The present perfect tense is used to express actions that occurred at an unspecified time in the past or that have relevance to the present moment. It is formed using the auxiliary verb "have" (or "has" for third person singular) followed by the past participle of the main verb.

Structure:

  • Affirmative: Subject + has/have + past participle
  • Negative: Subject + has/have + not + past participle
  • Interrogative: Has/Have + subject + past participle?

Examples:

  1. Affirmative:

    • I have eaten breakfast.
    • She has visited Paris.
  2. Negative:

    • They have not finished their homework.
    • He has not seen that movie.
  3. Interrogative:

    • Have you read the book?
    • Has she completed her project?

Usage:

  • To describe experiences: "I have been to Italy."
  • To describe changes over time: "My English has improved."
  • To describe accomplishments: "He has achieved great success."
  • To describe situations that started in the past and continue to the present: "We have lived here for five years."
